Biography

Painting at the crossroads of music and space

Ciro Jorge Pereira was born in 1957. He began working as a graphic artist in 1975 and attended the Artistic Training Course of the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon (1977–79), while also training as a violinist — music has remained a constant undercurrent of his painting.

He has lived in Mozambique since 1980, working in design for ministries and companies while dedicating himself to painting, set design and cultural animation. Since 1997 he has been at the Instituto Camões — Centro Cultural Português in Maputo, where he serves as Advisor for Arts and Cultural Animation.

He has held six solo exhibitions and taken part in more than forty collective shows; in 1997 he received the First Prize for Painting (ex aequo) at the MUSART/TDM Annual Exhibition at the National Art Museum, Maputo. A founding member of Kulungwana — Associação para o Desenvolvimento Cultural, he also teaches violin at the School of Communication and Arts of Eduardo Mondlane University. His works are held in public and private collections in Mozambique, Portugal, the United States, Zimbabwe and South Africa; in 2026 the Centro Cultural Português in Maputo dedicated the exhibition Prata da Casa to his work.
