Biography

Colour across disciplines

Luís Cardoso was born in the city of Beira in 1962. Involved with the arts since childhood, he passed early through the art and culture centres of his city, where he made first contact with the different disciplines of the visual arts.

Trained first as a teacher of Portuguese and History and later as a designer, he moves fluently between painting, drawing, watercolour, photography and digital illustration, and has developed illustration projects for publishers, including Editora Kapulana (Brazil), for which he illustrated volumes of the Contos de Moçambique series; his book illustrations also include Mia Couto's O Gato e o Escuro (2016).

He took part in the Bienal Internacional de Maputo — Habitantes do Desenho (Centro Cultural Português, Maputo, 2020–21), alongside Ídasse and Silva Dunduro. He is the coordinator of the guest artists of Idasse & Friends — Colours of Mozambique, the bridge between the featured artist and the wider circle of painters and sculptors gathered in this sale.
