Ulisses — Ulisses Oviedo, born in Cuba in 1952 and based in Maputo since 1990 — works between painting and assemblage — masks, boards and totemic forms built from oil, card and found matter, carrying the presence of ritual objects into contemporary art. Earth, rust and bone tones give each piece the gravity of something excavated rather than made.
This forthcoming single-artist sale will bring together a broader body of his work. Six works are already at auction in Idasse & Friends: Colours of Mozambique.
