Ídasse Malendza

Má hinguela Ka Mbilo carries the gravity of a closing statement — not an ending, but a culmination. Painted in 2024, it is among the most ambitious works in Ídasse's current series: the largest canvas in the opening sequence, and the one that asks most of its viewer. The title, in Changana, roots the work firmly in Mozambican experience — language as territory, as inheritance, as the specific weight of a place.

In oil on canvas, Ídasse works at full scale — the hundred-centimetre square frame containing a world of layered form and accumulated mark. The composition holds its tension through contrast: density against openness, the figured against the abstract, the local against the universal. To stand before it is to feel the pressure of something that has taken a long time to become itself.
